⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class I Luminaires & Flexible Cords (Part 4) ⚡
What wiring methods are permitted for portable work lights in hazardous areas? How do alarm and signaling systems comply with Article 501? Let's finish Article 501! 👇
Containing Lamp Heat:
Division 1 Luminaires: Must be identified as a complete assembly for Class I, Division 1, protected against physical damage, and clearly marked with maximum lamp wattage. Pendant fixtures must use threaded rigid metal conduit stems.
Division 2 Luminaires: Enclosed and gasketed luminaires are required where normal operating temperatures exceed 80 percent of the gas autoignition temperature.
Temporary Power & Alarms:
Flexible Cords: Permitted for portable equipment using extra-hard usage cords with an equipment grounding conductor, terminated with listed cord connectors or explosionproof attachment plugs.
Signaling Systems: In Class I, Division 1 locations, all apparatus and equipment for signaling, alarm, remote-control, and communications systems—regardless of voltage—must be identified for Class I, Division 1.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Audible signaling devices like horns and bells contain make-and-break contacts that can easily spark and ignite hazardous atmospheres. In Division 1 areas, they must be housed in explosion-proof enclosures just like heavy power equipment!
