I used to say “electrocution” for everything.
Someone gets hit with power and walks it off?
“Yeah he got electrocuted.”
Turns out… that’s not what that word means.
I ended up going down a rabbit hole on it, and part of it goes back to the early days of electricity—when Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were battling over AC vs DC.
Edison was trying to make AC look dangerous, so they actually used it in executions to prove a "point".
That’s where the word electrocution came from—basically meaning execution by electricity.
So yeah, the word was literally tied to death from the start.
Here's a Video to watch on it on YouTube (By "Arvin Ash"). It's a pretty good starter video to start researching the story.
Once I realized that, it clicked pretty fast:
Electric shock = Electricity hits you, and you're able to talk about it.
Electrocution = Electricity hits you and you die.
I keep it simple:
A Shock = A Jolt
Electrocution = electro + execution (Electro-Execution)
Or even easier:
If you’re still around to talk about it, it was a shock.
It just makes more sense once you know where the word came from.
Plus, don't wanna be throwing around “electrocution” like it’s nothing, after knowing the history, Its always in my head.
Either way, electricity isn’t something to play around with.
I had it wrong for a long time, but it’s simple:
Electric shock = you lived
Electrocution = you didn’t
That’s all.
