SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Permanent Audio Racks & Fire-Rated Walls (Part 3) ⚡
How do you ground metal audio equipment racks? What rules apply to speakers flush-mounted into fire-rated partitions? Let's check out Part II of Article 640! 👇
Grounding Enclosures & Accessible Switches:
Metal Racks Grounded: Metal equipment racks and enclosures must be bonded and grounded (unless connected to a technical power ground).
Clear Access: Wires, cables, and structural parts inside racks must never block reasonable access to equipment power switches and resettable circuit breakers.
Maintaining Partition Ratings:
Listed Speaker Assemblies: Loudspeakers installed in fire-resistance-rated partitions, walls, or ceilings must be listed and labeled as speaker assemblies for fire resistance, or installed in an enclosure/recress that maintains the full fire rating of the wall!
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Cutting a hole in a 2-hour fire-rated drywall partition to flush-mount a ceiling speaker instantly compromises the wall unless you install a listed fire-rated speaker enclosure behind it. Always verify AHJ requirements for site-built boxes!
