SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: High-Voltage Resistors & Reactors (Part 3) ⚡
Physical protection over 1000V, enclosure isolation, grounding clearances, and managing induced circulating currents—let's review Section 470.20! 👇
SLIDE 2 (PROTECTION, ISOLATION & CLEARANCES)
Safeguarding High-Voltage Units (Over 1000V):
Physical Protection & Isolation: Resistors and reactors must be protected against physical damage and isolated by enclosure or elevation to protect personnel from accidental contact.
Combustible Clearances: They must not be installed close enough to combustibles to create a fire hazard, maintaining a clearance of at least 305 mm (12 in.).
Grounded Surfaces: Clearances from resistors and reactors to grounded surfaces must be fully adequate for the operating voltage involved.
SLIDE 3 (INDUCED CIRCULATING CURRENTS)
Controlling Magnetic Heating:
Enclosure Temperature Rise: Metallic enclosures of reactors and adjacent metal parts must be installed so that the temperature rise caused by induced circulating currents is neither hazardous to personnel nor constitutes a fire hazard.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: When installing high-voltage reactors in metal enclosures, watch out for inductive heating effects on surrounding structural metal to prevent unexpected hot spots!
