The Electrical Nature of the SelfĀ
By JoshTheSparky.com (@JoshTheSparky4) (@JoshTheSparky on X)
I keep coming back to the connection between consciousness and electricity.
Not because electricity is some mysterious force, but because it is one of the most fundamental parts of how the brain operates. Every thought, memory, emotion, and decision we experience is connected to electrical and chemical activity happening across billions of neurons.
The brain is not just a collection of cells. It is a constantly changing electrical system, with signals moving, patterns forming, and information being processed every moment we are alive.
That raises an interesting question: is electricity simply the mechanism that allows consciousness to happen, or is the organization of those electrical patterns part of what consciousness actually is?
We already know that electrical activity affects the body. The nervous system uses electrical signals to control movement, sensation, and internal functions. The heart maintains its rhythm through electrical activity. The brain produces measurable patterns of electrical activity that change depending on what we are thinking, feeling, or experiencing.
The interesting part is not that electricity exists in us. We know it does.
The interesting part is that organized electrical activity can create something as complex as awareness.
In physics, patterns and interactions often matter more than the individual pieces. A wave is not a single particle of water. A flame is not a single piece of matter. They are processes created by many smaller interactions working together.
Could consciousness be similar?
Could the "self" be an ongoing processāa pattern of electrical and biological activity that continuously maintains itself?
This is where questions about frequencies, patterns, and resonance become interesting. The human body is not a simple machine, but it is a physical system that responds to signals and rhythms. Brain waves, heart rhythms, and neural activity all show that living systems operate through organized patterns.
Maybe consciousness is not something separate from the physical world. Maybe it is what happens when matter and energy become organized in a way that allows a system to experience itself.
We know electricity is part of the process.
We know the brain creates electrical patterns.
The unanswered question is how those patterns become something moreāthe experience of being aware.
