SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: MDC Lighting, Egress & Workspaces (Part 4) ⚡
How many exit doors do you need on a large modular data center? When is panic hardware mandatory? Let's finish Article 646! 👇
Ensuring Egress Visibility:
Reliable Lighting: Workspaces and exit pathways must have general and emergency lighting arranged so that the failure of a single lighting unit never results in a complete loss of illumination.
Emergency lighting circuits must be backed up by batteries, generators, UPS, or separate unit equipment.
Double Doors for Large Enclosures:
Workspace Rules: Space around electrical equipment must comply with standard 110.26 rules.
Dual Egress Doors: For equipment enclosures over 1.8 m (6 ft) wide or deep, there must be an entrance and egress door at each end of the workspace (at least 24 inches wide and 6.5 feet high) equipped with listed panic hardware or fire exit hardware! (Exceptions apply for continuous unobstructed egress or extra workspace depth).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: If you're walking into a large containerized data center enclosure over 6 feet wide, make sure both ends feature outward-swinging doors with panic hardware. Getting trapped inside a live server container during an emergency is a worst-case scenario!
