SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Electric Signs & Outline Lighting (Part 1 - Scope & Outlets) ⚡
Neon tubing, LEDs, retrofit kits, and commercial building sign outlets—welcome to Article 600. Whether it's a glowing storefront sign or building outline lighting, let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
What Does Article 600 Cover?
Broad Application: Covers installation of conductors, equipment, and field wiring for electric signs, retrofit kits, and outline lighting (including cold cathode neon, HID, LEDs, and fluorescent lighting).
Listing Required: Fixed, mobile, portable signs, and retrofit kits must be listed and labeled and installed per manufacturer instructions. (Exception: Field-installed skeleton tubing).
The 20-Amp Entrance Rule:
Mandatory Outlets: Each commercial building and accessible tenant space must be provided with at least one 20-ampere branch circuit outlet located at each entrance for sign use.
Dedicated Load: This outlet must be supplied by a dedicated 20-amp branch circuit supplying no other load.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Branch circuits supplying signs are considered continuous loads for sizing calculations. Standard sign branch circuits are capped at 20 amperes, while neon sign circuits are permitted up to 30 amperes!
