Article 384 (Part 2 of 2)
Strut-Type Channel Raceway — Support, Splices, Grounding & Construction Specs!
SLIDE 1 — Securing & Supporting (384.30)
📏 SURFACE MOUNT (384.30(A))
Secured to the mounting surface with retention straps EXTERNAL to the channel, at intervals not exceeding 3m (10 ft) and within 900mm (3 ft) of each outlet box, cabinet, junction box, or other raceway termination.
📏 SUSPENSION MOUNT (384.30(B))
Permitted to be suspended in air using identified methods, at intervals not exceeding 3m (10 ft) and within 900mm (3 ft) of raceway terminations and ends.
SLIDE 2 — Splices, Taps & Grounding (384.56, 384.60)
🔗 SPLICES & TAPS (384.56)
Permitted in raceways accessible after installation via a removable cover — conductors, splices, and taps combined shall not fill more than 75% of the raceway's area at that point. All splices/taps must use approved methods.
🌎 GROUNDING (384.60)
🔹 Enclosures transitioning to/from other wiring methods must have a means for connecting an EGC
🔹 The raceway ITSELF can serve as the EGC — recognized under 250.118(A)(13)
🔹 A snap-fit metal cover used to achieve electrical continuity (per listing) CANNOT double as the continuity path for a receptacle mounted in that cover
SLIDE 3 — Construction Specs (384.100)
🏗️ BUILT TO STAND APART
Raceways and fittings (elbows, couplings, etc.) must be designed to electrically AND mechanically couple together, and install without abrading the wires.
(A) Material → steel, stainless steel, or aluminum
(B) Corrosion Protection → steel raceways/accessories protected by galvanizing or an organic coating (enamel and PVC are examples)
(C) Cover → can be metal or nonmetallic
SLIDE 4 — Marking + Final Exam (384.120)
🏷️ MARKING
Each length must be clearly and durably identified as required by the first sentence of 110.21(A).
