Sizing, Bends & Support Table
SLIDE 1 — Sizing Rules (352.20)
📏 MINIMUM & MAXIMUM
Minimum: trade size ½
Maximum: trade size 6 — BUT listed PVC LARGER than trade size 6 IS permitted if ALL of these apply:
1️⃣ No part installed aboveground
2️⃣ Backfilled per 300.7(F)
3️⃣ Doesn't pass through/enter Class I or Zone 0/1/2 hazardous locations
4️⃣ Conductor/cable fill doesn't exceed Chapter 9 Table 1 percentages
🔢 CONDUCTOR FILL (352.22): per Chapter 9, Table 1 percentage fill — cables permitted too, subject to the same limits.
SLIDE 2 — Bends (352.24)
🔄 FIELD BENDS NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT
Field bends MUST use IDENTIFIED bending equipment (unlike metal conduits, which can often be bent manually). Bend radius per Chapter 9, Table 2.
📌 Pro tip: metal elbows are commonly used in underground PVC runs to protect against damage during conductor pulling — and if buried at least 18 in., those metal elbows DON'T need to be bonded to the grounded conductor or GEC (see 250.80 Exception).
Max 360° total bends per run between pull points — same universal rule.
SLIDE 3 — Trimming & Securing (352.28, 352.30(A))
✂️ TRIMMING (352.28)
Cut ends trimmed INSIDE AND OUTSIDE to remove rough edges.
🛠️ SECURING (352.30(A))
PVC must be installed as a complete system (300.20), fastened to ALLOW movement from thermal expansion/contraction. Secured within 3 ft (900mm) of each termination — unless listed for a different interval.
SLIDE 4 — Support Table + Exam Question
📊 TABLE 352.30(B) — SUPPORT SPACING BY SIZE
🔹 ½–1 in. → 3 ft (900mm)
🔹 1¼–2 in. → 5 ft (1.5m)
🔹 2½–3 in. → 6 ft (1.8m)
🔹 3½–5 in. → 7 ft (2.1m)
🔹 6 in. → 8 ft (2.5m)
Bigger conduit = longer allowable support spacing — same general logic as RMC's table, but with different numbers specific to PVC's flexibility characteristics.
🧠 TEST YOURSELF
Q: Per Table 352.30(B), what is the maximum support spacing for 2½–3 in. trade size PVC conduit?
A) 5 ft
B) 6 ft
C) 7 ft
D) 8 ft
