SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Fire Pumps (Part 1 - Scope & Power Sources) ⚡
When a building's life safety systems kick on, failure is not an option. Welcome to Article 695! How does the Code govern electric fire pump power supplies, listing requirements, and the strict ban on reconditioned gear? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
Life Safety Equipment Mandates:
Targeted Scope: Covers electric power sources, interconnecting circuits, and switching/control equipment dedicated to fire pump drivers. (Note: Jockey pumps and 1-2 family dwelling fire sprinklers are excluded).
Zero Reconditioned Gear: Reconditioned fire pump controllers and power transfer switches are strictly prohibited from being installed (Section 695.3).
Individual & Dedicated Connections:
Reliable Source Requirement: Electric fire pumps must have a reliable power source approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Permitted Individual Sources:
A separate utility service connection.
A tap ahead of and separate from the service disconnect (compliant with 230.82(16)).
An on-site power production facility.
A dedicated feeder derived from a dedicated service connection.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Unlike Article 700 emergency systems that automatically require an alternate generator source, Article 695 permits a single utility power source—provided the AHJ deems it reliable and it can carry locked-rotor current indefinitely!
