⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Rotary Start-Up & Protection (Part 4) ⚡
Rotary converter start-up sequencing, automatic power interruption safety, and capacitor placement rules—let's finish Article 455! 👇
SLIDE 2 (START-UP & POWER INTERRUPTION)
Controlling Rotary Converters:
Start-Up Sequence: Power to utilization equipment must not be supplied until the rotary-phase converter has been fully started.
Power Interruption Controls: Utilization equipment supplied by a rotary-phase converter must be controlled so that power is automatically disconnected in the event of a power interruption (using magnetic motor starters or contactors with time-delay/manual restarts).
SLIDE 3 (CAPACITOR PLACEMENT)
Wiring External Capacitors:
Motor Capacitors: Capacitors that are not an integral part of the rotary-phase conversion system but are installed for a specific motor load must be connected to the line side of that motor's overload protective device.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Ensure your rotary phase converter utilizes magnetic motor starters or control relays to drop out downstream loads automatically if utility power blips, preventing unsafe unattended restarts!
