⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Type A Rigid PVC Conduit ⚡
Thin-wall Type A PVC has a larger nominal internal diameter than standard Schedule 40 or Schedule 80. Here is your Chapter 9 breakdown for 1/2" through 4" 👇
SLIDE 2 (SMALLER TRADE SIZES) Small Type A PVC Trade Sizes:
1/2" (Metric 16)
Total Area (100%): 0.385 in² (249 mm²)
Over 2 Wires (40% Fill): 0.154 in² (100 mm²)
Internal Diameter: 0.700 in. (17.8 mm)
3/4" (Metric 21)
Total Area (100%): 0.650 in² (419 mm²)
Over 2 Wires (40% Fill): 0.260 in² (168 mm²)
Internal Diameter: 0.910 in. (23.1 mm)
1" (Metric 27)
Total Area (100%): 1.084 in² (697 mm²)
Over 2 Wires (40% Fill): 0.434 in² (279 mm²)
SLIDE 3 (MEDIUM TO LARGE SIZES) Medium to Large Type A PVC Sizes (40% Fill Limit):
1-1/4" (Metric 35): Total Area 1.767 in² | 40% Fill: 0.707 in² | ID: 1.500 in.
1-1/2" (Metric 41): Total Area 2.324 in² | 40% Fill: 0.929 in² | ID: 1.720 in.
2" (Metric 53): Total Area 3.647 in² | 40% Fill: 1.459 in² | ID: 2.155 in.
3" (Metric 78): Total Area 8.194 in² | 40% Fill: 3.278 in² | ID: 3.230 in.
4" (Metric 103): Total Area 13.723 in² | 40% Fill: 5.489 in² | ID: 4.180 in.
⚠️ Note: Type A stops at 4" (5" and 6" are not listed in Chapter 9 Table 4).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Tip:
Compare 1/2" Type A 40% fill (0.154 in²) to Schedule 40 (0.114 in²) and Schedule 80 (0.087 in²)—Type A gives you significantly more cross-sectional area, making wire pulls a whole lot smoother when specified!
