SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Technical Power Grounding & Center-Taps (Part 3) ⚡
Where do you ground a 60/120V technical power transformer? How do equipment grounding conductors tie into the technical equipment ground bus? Let's break down Section 647.7! 👇
Establishing the 60V Reference:
Secondary Center-Tap: The transformer secondary center-tap of the 60/120V 3-wire system must be grounded in accordance with Article 250.30 (separately derived systems).
Equal Voltage Potential: This creates a grounded reference point that maintains exactly 60 volts to ground on each of the two line conductors.
Low-Impedance Ground Paths:
Prominently Marked Bus: Branch circuits must include an EGC terminated on an equipment grounding bus prominently marked "Technical Equipment Ground" in the panelboard.
EGC Sizing: EGCs cannot be smaller than Table 250.122 ratings (and must be upsized if circuit conductors are enlarged for voltage drop).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: The technical equipment grounding bus is connected to the grounded center-tap conductor on the line side of the main disconnect, establishing a clean low-impedance ground-fault return path!
