⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Portable Feeder Cables & Dressing Rooms (Part 4) ⚡
Company switches, single-conductor feeder taps, and dressing room safety rules—let's finish Article 520! 👇
High-Capacity Road Shows:
Extra-Hard Usage: Portable switchboards must be supplied by listed extra-hard usage cords or cables.
Tap Rules: Supply conductors not exceeding 3 m (10 ft) or 6 m (20 ft) in length are permitted to be reduced in size if they meet strict ampacity and physical protection rules (similar to feeder tap rules).
Qualified Personnel: Routing portable supply cables, making/breaking connections, and energizing services must be performed strictly by qualified persons.
Safe Stage Extras:
Hard Usage Cords: Protected hard usage (junior hard service) cords are permitted under specific conditions (e.g., attached to trusses or supporting structures, protected by <= 20A OCPDs).
Dressing Room Lamps: Pendant lampholders are banned. Exposed lamps less than 2.5 m (8 ft) from the floor require open-end guards.
Wall Switches & Pilot Lights: All luminaires and mirror-adjacent receptacles in dressing rooms must be controlled by wall switches with a recessed or guarded pilot light outside the door.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: All metal raceways, cable armor, and metal equipment frames across the entire theater stage must be bonded to an equipment grounding conductor!
