SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Pipe Organ Wire Gauges (Part 2 - Article 650) ⚡
Where else in the NEC will you see 28 AWG wire explicitly permitted? Section 650.7 lays out unique minimum wire sizes for pipe organ solenoids and electronic signals. Let's break down the gauge rules! 👇
Small Wire for Big Sound:
Electronic Signals: Minimum conductor size is 28 AWG for electronic signal circuits.
Electromagnetic Valves: Minimum conductor size is 26 AWG for electromagnetic valve supply (solenoids operating pipe valves).
Common Return: The main common-return conductor in the electromagnetic supply shall not be smaller than 14 AWG.
Insulation Requirements:
Thermoplastic/Thermosetting: Conductors must feature thermoplastic or thermosetting insulation suitable for control wiring.
Common Return Flexibility: The common-return conductor is permitted inside an overall cable bundle or run as a separate conductor in contact with the cable assembly.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: The 14 AWG minimum rule for the main common return accounts for the cumulative current of multiple organ stops and keys being played simultaneously. Never downsize that return path!
