Slide 1 — Hook "Today: what happens where a raceway transitions to open wiring, how many conductors actually fit in a raceway, and why raceways have to be complete before you pull wire."
Slide 2 — 300.18 Transitioning to open/concealed wiring
Where conduit/EMT/ENT/NM/AC/MC/MI cable or surface raceway transitions to open wiring or concealed knob-and-tube wiring: a box, conduit body, or terminal fitting with a SEPARATELY bushed hole per conductor is required. That fitting can't contain taps/splices and can't be used at luminaire outlets (a conduit body CAN contain them if it meets 314.16(C)(2)).
A bushing alone (instead of a box) is allowed where conductors emerge from a raceway into equipment like open switchboards or unenclosed control equipment — must be insulating type (except for lead-sheathed conductors).
Slide 3 — 300.19 & 300.20
300.19(A): conductor/cable fill in a raceway can't exceed the allowable percentage in Chapter 9 Table 1.
300.19(B): metric designators and trade sizes are just two labeling systems for the same physical raceway sizes (e.g., metric designator 21 = trade size ¾") — not actual different dimensions, and metric-THREADED conduit isn't permitted even though metric-designator-labeled conduit is fine.
300.20(A): raceways must be installed COMPLETE between outlet/junction/splice points BEFORE conductors go in — with exceptions for busways, listed manufactured assemblies, exposed raceways with hinged/removable covers, raceways left unterminated to facilitate utilization equipment hookup, specifically-permitted prewired assemblies, and short protective sections.
300.20(B): metal raceways can never be supported, terminated, or connected by WELDING.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "Can conductors be pulled into a raceway before that raceway is installed complete between outlet/junction points?" A) Yes, always B) No, generally — with specific listed exceptions (busways, hinged-cover raceways, utilization equipment connections, etc.) C) Only for conduit under 1 in. trade size D) Only for residential work
✅ Answer: B — 300.20(A): the raceway generally must be complete first, with a defined set of exceptions.
