SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Circuit Sizing & OCPD for ESS (Part 4) ⚡
How do you size conductors and overcurrent protection for energy storage output circuits? Part IV of Article 706 covers the math and charge controller rules. Let's break it down! 👇
SLIDE 2 (CIRCUIT SIZING & THE 125% RULE) Conductor and OCPD Calculations:
Conductor Ampacity: Output circuit ampacity must not be less than the greater of the nameplate-rated circuit current or the OCPD rating.
OCPD Sizing: Overcurrent protective devices must be sized to carry not less than 125 percent of the maximum calculated ESS circuit current.
DC Rating: OCPDs used in any DC portion of an ESS must be explicitly listed for DC with appropriate voltage and interrupting ratings.
SLIDE 3 (CHARGE CONTROL & DIVERSION CONTROLLERS) Managing the Charging Process:
Qualified Access Only: All adjustable charging control means must be accessible exclusively to qualified persons.
Diversion Controllers: If using a diversion charge controller as the sole charging regulator, a second independent overcharging protection means is mandatory.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Whenever ESS input or output circuits pass through a wall, floor, or ceiling, overcurrent protection must be installed at the energy storage component end of the circuit conductor. Always protect your sources!
