⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Hazardous Locations Overview (Part 1 - Classes & Divisions) ⚡
Entering the world of classified environments—welcome to Article 500! How do you distinguish between Class I gases, Class II dusts, and Division 1 vs. Division 2 hazards? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
Categorizing Hazardous Atmospheres:
Class I locations involve flammable gases, flammable liquid-produced vapors, or combustible liquid-produced vapors present in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures.
Class II locations are hazardous due to the presence of combustible dust.
Class III locations involve easily ignitable fibers or combustible fibers/flyings.
Probability and Frequency of Hazard:
Division 1 covers areas where ignitable concentrations exist under normal operating conditions, frequently during maintenance, or via equipment breakdown paired with simultaneous electrical failure.
Division 2 covers areas where hazardous materials are normally confined within closed systems and can only escape through accidental rupture, abnormal operation, or ventilation failure.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Each room, section, or area must be evaluated individually. Always verify that classified areas are meticulously documented on official area classification drawings available to the AHJ!
