⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Grounding & Factory Testing (Part 4) ⚡
Chassis bonding, insulated neutral buses, and dielectric strength testing—let's finish Article 552! 👇
SLIDE 2 (WIRING METHODS & CABLE PROTECTION)
Protection in Wood and Metal Framing:
Stud Protection: Cables passing through 2x2 wood studs (or where less than 32 mm / 1.25 in. from the edge) require steel protection plates or sleeves with a minimum 1.35 mm wall thickness.
Cable Supports: Secured and supported within 300 mm (12 in.) of outlet boxes and panelboards, and at intervals not exceeding 1.4 m (4.5 ft) elsewhere. Nonmetallic boxes without cable clamps require securing within 200 mm (8 in.).
Under-Chassis Runs: Exposed line-voltage (120V+) outdoor or under-chassis wiring must be protected by RMC, IMC, EMT, PVC, or approved raceways.
SLIDE 3 (GROUNDING, BONDING & FACTORY TESTS)
Isolating Neutrals and Testing Safety:
Neutral Isolation: The grounded circuit conductor (neutral) must be completely insulated from equipment enclosures and the frame. Panelboard and appliance bonding screws/straps must be removed and discarded.
Chassis Bonding: All exposed non-current-carrying metal parts must be bonded to the panelboard grounding terminal using a solid or stranded copper bonding conductor sized at 8 AWG minimum.
Mandatory Factory Tests: Every park trailer must pass a 1-minute, 900-volt ac (or 1-second, 1080-volt ac) dielectric strength test, alongside continuity, polarity, operational, and GFCI functional tests before delivery.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
A unitized metal chassis frame securely bolted, welded, or riveted to the panelboard is automatically considered bonded, saving you an extra ground wire run to the chassis!
