⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Bulk Plant Overhead Wiring & Bonding (Part 4) ⚡
What enclosure rules apply to overhead lighting in bulk plants? How do sealing and grounding mandates protect storage terminals? Let's finish Article 515! 👇
Protecting Overhead Spaces:
Fixed Overhead Wiring: Fixed wiring installed above hazardous classified locations must comply with Section 501.10(B) or 505.15(C).
Arcing Equipment: Fixed equipment capable of producing arcs or sparks (such as lighting fixtures, switches, receptacles, and motors) must be of the totally enclosed type or constructed to prevent the escape of sparks or hot metal particles.
Portable Equipment: Portable luminaires and their flexible cords must comply with Article 501 Part III or Section 505.17 for the specific class of location.
Total System Integrity:
Sealing (515.9): Sealing requirements apply equally to horizontal and vertical boundaries of defined Class I locations.
Motor Fuel Dispensers (515.10): Any dispensers for gasoline or alternative motor fuels located within a bulk storage plant must also comply with Article 514 rules.
Grounding and Bonding (515.16): All metal raceways, cable armor/sheaths, and non-current-carrying metal parts of fixed or portable equipment must be grounded and bonded regardless of voltage per Section 500.30 or 505.30.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Static protection grounding per NFPA 30 is critical at bulk storage plants to safely dissipate electrostatic charges during high-speed fluid transfers across tank trucks and marine terminals!
