SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Transport Refrigerated Units - TRUs (Part 3) ⚡
Refrigerated semi-trailers need heavy-duty three-phase power to keep cargo cold. Part IV of Article 626 sets strict rules for TRU branch circuits and receptacles. Let's break it down! 👇
Dedicated Refrigeration Power:
Three-Phase Power: TRU spaces must be supplied from 208V, 240V, or 480V 3-phase branch circuits complete with an equipment grounding conductor.
Independent Supply: Equipment providing power for TRUs must be completely independent of the cab parking space loads covered in Part III.
Industrial Connections & Drive-Away Safety:
Receptacle Types: TRU spaces must be equipped with listed pin-and-sleeve receptacles (such as 30A or 60A, 480V/208V 3-phase configurations).
Breakaway Mandate: Power supply cable assemblies must feature an integral breakaway means to prevent rupture or damage if a truck pulls away while still plugged in!
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Disconnecting means for transport refrigerated units must be readily accessible, lockable open, and located not more than 750 mm (30 in.) from the outlet supplying the receptacle or cord connector!
