⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Projection Room Equipment & Work Space (Part 2) ⚡
Where can motor-generator sets and transformers be placed? What are the strict working space clearances around projectors? Let's check Sections 540.11 through 540.12! 👇
Guarding Against Sparks:
Nitrate vs. Safety Film Rules: Where nitrate film is used, power-supply equipment must be in a separate room. Where placed in projection rooms, they must be guarded so arcs/sparks cannot contact film.
Commutator Protection: Motor-generator commutator ends must feature approved enclosures (totally enclosed, separate housings, tight metal housings, or wire screens with openings not exceeding 1.27 mm / 0.05 in.).
Prohibited Equipment: General switches and OCPDs not required for projection or sound reproduction are barred from projection rooms, except appurtenant light/curtain controls or safety film exception signs.
Clearances Around Projectors:
The 30-Inch Rule: Each motion picture projector, floodlight, spotlight, or similar equipment must have a clear working space not less than 750 mm (30 in.) wide on each side and at the rear.
Shared Spaces: One such clear space is permitted between adjacent pieces of equipment.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: In safety film projection rooms, posting the required "Safety Film Only Permitted in This Room" sign on both the outside door and inside the booth is a mandatory code check item!
