Support, Branches & Grounding
SLIDE 1 — Support and Dead Ends
🛠️ SUPPORT (368.30)
Securely supported at intervals not exceeding 5 ft (1.5m) — unless otherwise designed and marked.
🔚 DEAD ENDS (368.58): must be CLOSED — no open, exposed bus ends.
SLIDE 2 — Branches from Busways (368.56(A))
🔌 WIRING METHODS PERMITTED FOR BRANCHES
A long list of compatible wiring methods: AC cable, MC cable, MI cable, IMC, RMC, FMC, LFMC, PVC, RTRC, LFNC, EMT, ENT, busways themselves, strut-type channel raceway, surface metal raceway, surface nonmetallic raceway.
Where a separate EGC connects to the busway, it must comply with 250.8 and 250.12.
SLIDE 3 — Cord/Cable Branches
🔗 CORD AND CABLE ASSEMBLIES (368.56(B))
Permitted for portable OR stationary equipment (facilitating interchange) IF:
✅ Attached to the building by approved means
✅ Length from plug-in device to tension take-up support: max 6 ft (1.8m)
✅ Installed as a vertical riser from support device to equipment
✅ Strain relief cable grips at BOTH the busway plug-in AND equipment terminations
Exception (industrial only, qualified persons): lengths CAN exceed 6 ft if supported at intervals ≤8 ft (2.5m).
Trolley-type busways (368.56(C)): suitable cord/cable assemblies permitted for movable equipment connections per 400.10/400.12.
SLIDE 4 — Grounding + Exam Question
🌎 GROUNDING (368.60)
Busway connects to an EGC, equipment bonding jumper, OR grounded conductor per 250.92(B)(1) or 250.142.
🏷️ MARKING (368.120): voltage/current rating + manufacturer name/trademark, visible after installation.
