⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Wiring Devices (Part 1 - Article 406) ⚡
Receptacle ratings, weather-resistant mandates, and strict wet-location rules—welcome to Article 406! How does the National Electrical Code regulate wiring devices? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE, LISTING & RECONDITIONED EQUIPMENT)
General Requirements:
Article Scope: Covers the rating, type, and installation of wiring devices.
Listing Mandate: All wiring devices must be listed.
Reconditioned Ban: Reconditioned wiring devices are strictly not permitted to be installed.
SLIDE 3 (DAMP & WET LOCATION RECEPTACLES)
Weatherproofing Requirements:
Weather-Resistant Type: All 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in damp or wet locations must be listed weather-resistant (WR) types featuring extra corrosion, UV, and cold impact resistance.
Extra-Duty Hoods: Receptacles in wet locations require an enclosure that is weatherproof whether or not the plug is inserted, and outlet box hoods must be listed as extra-duty.
Tub and Shower Exclusion: Receptacles are prohibited inside tub or shower spaces or within a 3-foot horizontal and 8-foot vertical zone (with specific exceptions like electronic bidet seats in dwelling units).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Always verify that outdoor and wet-location receptacles are marked as WR (Weather-Resistant) and paired with extra-duty in-use covers—standard indoor receptacles will fail inspection instantly!
