⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Simple Apparatus & T-Codes (Part 2 - Article 504) ⚡
Thermocouples, switches, and terminal blocks—what is a "simple apparatus" under Article 504? How do you calculate surface temperatures? Let's check Section 504.10(D)! 👇
Low-Energy Field Devices:
Definition: A simple apparatus (such as switches, thermocouples, and LED indicators) stores little or no energy and is permitted without requiring listing or explicit mention on the control drawing, provided it doesn't interconnect I.S. circuits.
Temperature Class (Class I): Surface temperature must not exceed the gas ignition temperature, determined via manufacturer output power and thermal resistance formulas or Table 504.10(D)(1).
Ambient Temperature Limits:
Class I Terminal Ratings: Terminal boxes and switches in I.S. circuits can be classified as T6 at 40°C ambient, T5 at 55°C, or T4 at 80°C.
Class II/III Ratings: For dust locations with continuous short-circuit current under 250 mA and restricted dissipated power, a T4 or T135°C temperature classification applies.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Listed terminal blocks have a maximum temperature rise of 30 K at their rated current. Always factor in ambient enclosure heat when evaluating I.S. temperature classes!
