SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Receptacle Installation & Safety (Part 3) ⚡
Grounding requirements, replacement rules, faceplate positioning, and tamper-resistant mandates—let's review Sections 406.12 through 406.26! 👇
SLIDE 2 (GENERAL INSTALLATION & REPLACEMENTS)
Grounding and Upgrades:
Grounding Type Required: Receptacles installed on 15- and 20-ampere branch circuits must be of the grounding type.
Replacement Rules: Replacing receptacles requires complying with modern safety standards, including GFCI, AFCI, and weather-resistant protections where mandated.
Faceplate Projections: Receptacle faces must be flush with or project from insulating faceplates, and project a minimum of 0.015 inches from metal faceplates. Face-up orientations on countertops or under sinks are generally prohibited.
SLIDE 3 (TAMPER-RESISTANT RECEPTACLES)
Protecting Children:
Mandated Locations: Listed tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles are required in dwelling units, guest rooms, child care facilities, schools, gymnasiums, and waiting spaces for receptacles located below 5.5 feet.
Shutter Mechanism: Built-in shutters prevent foreign object insertion unless dual blades are inserted simultaneously.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
When replacing standard receptacles in a bedroom or living area of a home, remember that current code requires upgrading them to tamper-resistant (and often AFCI/GFCI protected) devices!
