⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Underground Runs & Dispenser Seals (Part 3) ⚡
Why are conduit seals mandatory right at the dispenser base? What are the rules for underground PVC and metal conduit? Let's review Sections 514.8 and 514.9! 👇
Transitioning to Grade:
Metal Conduit: Threaded RMC or IMC is permitted underground, but any wiring below a Class I location must be sealed within 3.05 m (10 ft) of emergence with no unions or fittings between the seal and grade.
Nonmetallic Conduit: PVC, RTRC, or HDPE must be buried under at least 600 mm (2 ft) of cover, and threaded RMC/IMC must be used for the last 2 ft of the underground run to emergence, including an equipment grounding conductor.
Stopping Vapor Migration:
The First Fitting Rule: A listed seal must be provided in each conduit run entering or leaving a dispenser. The sealing fitting (or explosionproof reducer) must be the very first fitting after the conduit emerges from the earth or concrete.
Why It Matters: Spilled fuel seeping into the ground can migrate through underground conduits; these seals prevent gasoline vapors from reaching remote panelboards in unclassified areas.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Even if a conduit runs directly from one dispenser to another without leaving the hazardous island, a seal fitting is legally required where the conduit enters each dispenser enclosure!
