⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Spray Area Wiring & Lighting (Part 3) ⚡
Can you run standard conduit inside a paint spray booth? How do glass observation panels protect lighting fixtures? Let's review Sections 516.8 and 516.9! 👇
Restricted Raceways:
Vapor-Only vs. Residue Areas: Wiring in areas containing only vapors complies with Article 501 Part II/III. However, where combustible residues accumulate, no electrical equipment is permitted except rigid metal conduit (RMC), intermediate metal conduit (IMC), Type MI cable, or metal boxes containing zero taps, splices, or terminal connections.
Static Grounding: All conductive objects, metal process equipment, containers, exhaust ducts, and piping conveying flammable liquids must be electrically grounded with a resistance of not more than 1 megohm.
Lighting Standards:
External Fixtures: Luminaires mounted outside spray areas separated by heat-treated, laminated, wired, or hammered-wired glass panels can be suitable for unclassified locations if serviced from the outside.
Integral Fixtures: Fixtures built into the walls or ceiling must be listed for Division 2 / Zone 2 locations and listed for accumulations of combustible residues. Glass panels must prevent surface temperatures from exceeding 105°C (221°F).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Portable electric luminaires or utilization equipment are strictly prohibited inside spray areas during active spraying operations unless specifically identified for Class I, Division 1!
