⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Installation Rules & Ground-Fault Protection (Part 2) ⚡
Physical damage protection, 60°C surface thermal guards, embedded watt density limits, and equipment ground-fault protection—let's check Sections 426.10 through 426.28! 👇
SLIDE 2 (INSTALLATION & THERMAL PROTECTION)
Safeguarding Equipment and Personnel:
Environmental Suitability: Equipment must be identified as suitable for the environment, protected from physical damage, and installed per manufacturer instructions.
Thermal Protection: External surfaces exceeding 60°C (140°F) must be physically guarded, isolated, or thermally insulated to protect personnel.
SLIDE 3 (EMBEDDED ELEMENTS & GROUND-FAULT PROTECTION)
Embedded Spacing and Leakage Protection:
Watt Density & Spacing: Embedded panels or units cannot exceed 1300 watts/m² (120 watts/ft²), with adjacent cable spacing at least 25 mm (1 in.) on centers.
Ground-Fault Equipment Protection: Ground-fault protection must be provided for fixed outdoor electric deicing and snow-melting equipment at the trip level specified by the manufacturer to reduce fire risks from arcing.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Always ensure your outdoor deicing circuits are backed by dedicated equipment ground-fault protection specified by the manufacturer—this specialized protection prevents low-level arcing fires!
