⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Paddle Fans & Disconnects (Part 3) ⚡
Ceiling fan tub/shower exclusion zones, simultaneous disconnects, and unit switch rules—let's review Sections 422.18 through 422.35! 👇
SLIDE 2 (CEILING-SUSPENDED PADDLE FANS)
Clearance and Support:
Fan Support: Paddle fans must be supported independently of an outlet box or by a listed fan-support outlet box/system.
Bathroom Zone Ban: No parts of ceiling-suspended paddle fans can be located within a zone measured 900 mm (3 ft) horizontally and 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of a bathtub rim or shower stall threshold.
SLIDE 3 (DISCONNECTING MEANS)
Simultaneous Disconnection:
Simultaneous Break: A means must be provided to simultaneously disconnect each appliance from all ungrounded conductors.
Within Sight: For permanently connected appliances, the branch-circuit OCPD can serve as the disconnect if it is within sight from the appliance or lockable open per Section 110.25.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Never hang a ceiling paddle fan directly over a bathtub or inside the 3-foot horizontal wet zone unless it clears the mandatory 8-foot vertical height limit!
