When the Power Grid Becomes a Witness

Most people think of the electrical grid as nothing more than the system that powers our homes and businesses. Flip a switch, and the lights come on. But behind the scenes, the grid also creates records that can become valuable during investigations.

Electric utilities routinely collect operational information to safely manage and maintain the electric system. Depending on the utility and the type of meter installed, this may include when electricity is used, how much energy is consumed, and when outages or service interruptions occur. This information primarily exists to improve reliability, restore power faster, and accurately bill customers.

Under the appropriate legal process, investigators may obtain utility records as part of a criminal investigation. These records are not used alone to determine whether a crime has occurred. Instead, they may help establish timelines or identify unusual patterns that warrant additional investigation.

For example, investigators have used utility data while investigating:

• Electricity theft

• Meter tampering or bypasses

• Illegal indoor grow operations with unusually high electrical demand

• Other cases where power usage is relevant to the alleged offense

It's important to understand that high electrical consumption, by itself, does not prove criminal activity. Many perfectly legitimate homes and businesses consume large amounts of electricity because of electric heating systems, EV charging, workshops, servers, or other energy-intensive equipment.

Utility records are just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Investigators may compare them with surveillance footage, financial records, witness statements, phone records, and other evidence to build a more complete picture of events.

The modern electrical grid does far more than deliver electricity. It also generates operational data that, when legally obtained and combined with other evidence, can help investigators understand what happened and when.

As electricians, it's fascinating to see how the systems we work on every day can intersect with technology, law enforcement, and forensic investigations. The electrical industry touches far more aspects of society than most people realize.
