Article 800 (Part 1 of 2)
Communications Systems Outside and Entering Buildings!
SLIDE 1 — Scope & Listing (800.1, 800.2)
🏗️ WHAT DOES ARTICLE 800 COVER?
Requirements for communications system wires and cables OUTSIDE and ENTERING buildings.
✅ LISTING REQUIREMENTS (800.2)
🔹 Communications wires (distributing frame/jumper wire) → must be listed as resistant to the spread of fire
🔹 Drop wires/cables WITHOUT a metallic shield, from the last outdoor support to the primary protector → must be listed as suitable for the purpose
🔹 Premises-powered broadband equipment → network terminal (+ grounding means) must be listed for the application; accessory equipment must be listed too
SLIDE 2 — Overhead Wires: Shared Poles & Roofs (800.44(A)–(B))
🏗️ SHARING A POLE WITH POWER (800.44(A))
🔹 Comms wires located BELOW electric light/power conductors where practicable
🔹 Can’t attach to a cross-arm carrying power conductors
🔹 Climbing space must comply with 225.14(B)
🔹 0–750V power conductors running above/parallel to comms drops → min 300mm (12 in.) separation in the span, with ≥1.0m (40 in.) clearance at the pole (if ungrounded conductors are insulated)
🏠 ABOVE ROOFS (800.44(B))
Min vertical clearance 2.5m (8 ft) above roofs — EXCEPTIONS: not required above auxiliary buildings (garages); reduced to 450mm (18 in.) for short overhang runs (≤1.2m/4 ft) terminating at a raceway/support; reduced to 900mm (3 ft) on roofs sloped ≥4 in./12 in.
SLIDE 3 — Masts, Between Buildings & On Buildings (800.44(C)–(E))
🗼 ON MASTS (800.44(C))
Aerial comms/conductive fiber/CATV cables can attach to an above-roof raceway mast NOT enclosing power conductors. Nonconductive fiber cables CAN attach to a mast that does enclose power conductors.
🏢 BETWEEN BUILDINGS (800.44(D))
Cables and their supports must be identified and strong enough for the loads — if not self-supporting, must attach to a messenger cable rated for the load.
🏠 ON BUILDINGS (800.44(E))
🔹 From electric light/power/Class 1/non-power-limited fire alarm conductors not in raceway →> 100 mm (4 in.) separation, or a fixed nonconductive barrier
🔹 From OTHER comms systems → installed to avoid interference; no system’s wires/cables/messenger may abrade another’s
SLIDE 4 — Underground Systems + Final Exam (800.47)
🌎 SHARING A RACEWAY/HANDHOLE WITH POWER (800.47(A))
Comms/fiber/CATV cables sharing a raceway, pedestal, handhole, or manhole with electric light/power/Class 1/fire alarm conductors → must be separated by brick, concrete, tile partitions, or a suitable barrier.
🌎 DIRECT-BURIED (800.47(B))
Min 300mm (12 in.) separation from light/power/fire alarm/Class 1 conductors — UNLESS everything’s in raceway or has metal armor (several specific exceptions apply).
🌎 PREMISES-POWERED BROADBAND, DIRECT-BURIED (800.47(C))
Min 150mm (6 in.) cover required.
🌎 UNDERGROUND BLOCK DISTRIBUTION (800.47(D))
Where the whole street circuit is underground and free from accidental contact with >300V power circuits → insulation/bushing requirements are relaxed.
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 800 (Part 1)
Q: Per 800.44(B), communications wires/cables above a roof shall have a minimum vertical clearance of what, absent an exception?
A) 6 ft (1.8m)
B) 8 ft (2.5m)
C) 10 ft (3.0m)
D) 12 ft (3.6m)
