Slide 1 — Hook: "New article! Article 268 covers medium/high-voltage SERVICES — the utility-to-building connection point, but over 1000V AC / 1500V DC." Text overlay: ARTICLE 268 — SERVICES OVER 1000V ⚡ Part 1 of 13
Slide 2 — 268.1 & 268.2
Scope: covers service conductors and equipment for control/protection of services over 1000V AC or 1500V DC — installation requirements included. Never applies to anything on the SUPPLY side of the service point (that's the utility's territory, not the NEC's).
Listing: all service equipment must be listed or field-evaluated. Pressure connectors/splice-and-tap devices for service conductors must be listed too.
Slide 3 — 268.4 Number of services — normally just ONE
A building/structure generally gets only ONE service — but exceptions exist for: fire pumps, emergency systems, legally required standby, optional standby, interconnected power production sources, and enhanced-reliability multi-source designs.
Special permission can also allow extra services for multi-occupancy buildings with no shared equipment space, very large single structures, loads over 2000A, loads bigger than the utility normally serves through one connection, or genuinely different voltage/frequency/phase/rate-schedule needs.
If a building has multiple services (or a mix of services/feeders/branch circuits), a permanent plaque/directory at each service disconnect must identify everything else supplying that building and what area each one covers.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "How many services can normally supply a single building, absent any of the listed exceptions?" A) One B) Two C) Three D) As many as needed
✅ Answer: A — 268.4: one service per building, unless a specific exception applies.
