Wonder is a rapidly expanding micro-food hall concept that brings menus from 20+ restaurants and celebrity chefs (including Bobby Flay, Marcus Samuelsson, Michael Symon, and others) under one roof and one kitchen. Guests can order from multiple concepts in a single order for dine-in, takeout, or delivery. The Springfield location is being built at the former Denny’s site at 1284 Boston Road, directly adjacent to an existing Aldi supermarket. The project required a full electrical service upgrade and careful coordination with the neighboring Aldi to maintain continuous power.

Wonder Food Hall – 1284 Boston Road, Springfield, MA
Role: First-Month Electrical Apprentice
Duration: Approximately 6 weeks

As a first-month apprentice, my primary responsibilities centered on commercial rough-in and service work, including:
Extensive installation of metallic cable (MC) runs throughout the space.
Supporting the temporary generation transfer so the project could connect to the existing transformer while keeping the adjacent Aldi fully operational.
Assisting with the permanent service installation: pulling approximately 200+ feet of six parallel runs of 750 kcmil conductors from the transformer to the new service.
Coordinating the transfer back from temporary generation to permanent utility power once the new service was ready.
Eversource supplied a large portable generator staged in the busy Aldi parking lot. The transformer serving the site is rated 480 kVA.

The most intensive portion of the job was the service conductor pull and the generation transfer sequence:
Cable was laid out carefully across the parking lot and pulled through underground conduit into the transformer vault.
Easy-glide lubricant was used to reduce friction and protect the conductors.
The supervisor’s truck provided mechanical assistance during the pull.
Communication between the pulling and feeding crews was critical while working inside the vault, especially when getting the conductors started without damage.
The work took place in an active retail parking lot, requiring constant awareness of vehicle traffic, pedestrian shoppers, and the noise of horns and alarms.
Despite the constraints, the transfer was completed successfully and Aldi remained powered throughout.
Coming into the trade expecting primarily residential work, the commercial environment presented a steep learning curve:
Exposure to a wider range of materials, methods, and equipment than I had previously encountered.
The critical importance of accurate blueprint reading and understanding the overall system design.
The need for clear, constant communication among crew members, especially during coordinated pulls and live transfers.
Managing physical fatigue and personal well-being over long days in a high-activity outdoor/indoor setting.
The combination of traffic, limited space, underground vault access, and the need to protect expensive large-gauge conductors made the service work particularly demanding.
Over the six-week assignment, I progressed from cautious observation to more confident participation in daily tasks. By the end of the job I felt significantly more comfortable in a commercial environment, more capable with MC installation and basic service work, and better equipped to read drawings and communicate effectively on a jobsite.
The experience reinforced the value of patience, clear communication, and attention to detail when working around energized systems, the public, and neighboring businesses. It also demonstrated how temporary power solutions and utility coordination are essential parts of commercial construction.
This temporary assignment with Power On on the Wonder Food Hall project provided a strong introduction to commercial electrical work. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a complex service upgrade and generation transfer while supporting a high-profile new development in Springfield. The skills and confidence gained in these six weeks form a solid foundation for continued growth as an apprentice.
