Over the past few months, I've completely changed the way I study the National Electrical Code.
When I first started, I thought the goal was to memorize everything. I wanted to remember article numbers, table locations, exceptions, and definitions. I figured the more I memorized, the better electrician I'd become.
The more I studied, though, the more I realized I was approaching the NEC the wrong way.
The NEC isn't really a book you're supposed to memorize. It's a reference manual. Professional electricians don't carry the entire Code in their heads—they know how to navigate it efficiently and understand how the rules fit together. That realization changed my entire study process.
Today I usually work through about 30 to 40 Code lookup questions a day. I don't time myself because speed isn't what I'm trying to improve. My focus is understanding the question before I ever look for an answer.
I spend time figuring out what the question is actually asking. Is it describing a dwelling, a commercial building, or an industrial installation? What equipment is involved? What article would likely apply? Sometimes simply understanding the scenario is harder than finding the Code section.
The questions themselves come from all over the place. I write some of my own, but I also use Mike Holt's Question of the Day, Fast Trax discussions, online practice exams, AI-generated scenarios, forums, and even debates I find in comment sections. It doesn't really matter where the question comes from because every one of them eventually leads back to the NEC.
One thing I've started doing differently is paying much more attention to the wrong answers on multiple-choice questions. Instead of looking for the correct answer immediately, I ask myself why each incorrect choice exists. Was it pulled from another Code article? Is it almost correct but missing an important detail? Could it be right in a different situation?
I've learned that understanding why an answer is wrong can teach just as much as understanding why another answer is right.
When I open the NEC, I don't rely on memory. I rely on its structure. I use the index, definitions, scope, article layout, tables, and exceptions to work my way toward the answer. Every time I do that, I become a little more familiar with how the Code is organized. That's a skill that's far more valuable than simply memorizing article numbers.
This approach reminds me of Paul Abernathy's Three Wave Method, although I've naturally adapted it into something that works for me. First, I make sure I understand the scenario. Then I analyze each answer choice using the Code instead of guessing. Finally, I verify everything inside the NEC and go back through the question one more time to make sure the reasoning holds up.
The biggest change, however, has been creating my own questions.
Instead of only solving practice problems, I've started building my own scenarios based on things I see at work, conversations with other electricians, AI prompts, or Code sections I'm trying to understand better. Writing the question forces me to think differently. I have to understand the installation, identify the applicable rules, and think about where someone could make a mistake before I even start looking for an answer.
That process has probably taught me more than simply answering hundreds of practice questions.
I still have a long way to go. There are plenty of Code articles I haven't studied deeply yet, and I'm sure I'll continue misunderstanding things along the way. But I finally feel like I'm learning the NEC the way it was intended to be learned—not by trying to memorize every page, but by understanding how it's organized, how to navigate it, and how to apply it to real situations.
Looking back, I don't think my goal is to memorize the NEC anymore.
My goal is to become someone who knows how to use it.
