SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Wind Electric Systems (Part 1 - Scope & Surge Protection) ⚡
Onshore towers, offshore turbine farms, and renewable residential generators—welcome to Article 694! How does the Code regulate wind turbine listings, diversion loads, and lightning protection? Let's break down the basics! 👇
Covering Onshore & Offshore Turbines:
Targeted Scope: Applies to wind electric systems consisting of generators, alternators, inverters, and controllers, regardless of kW rating.
Listing Mandate: Wind systems must be listed (such as UL 6141 and UL 6142) or evaluated for the application with a field label applied.
Preventing Over-Speed & Lightning Strikes:
Diversion Load Safety: Systems using a diversion load controller as the primary rotor speed regulator must have an independent, reliable backup means to prevent dangerous over-speeding.
Surge Protection (SPDs): Listed SPDs (Type 2 or Type 3) are mandatory between wind systems and premises wiring to protect against lightning surges on tall towers.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Because wind turbine towers are almost always the tallest structures in the vicinity, installing listed surge protection devices is non-negotiable to prevent lightning strikes from frying your premises wiring and inverter electronics!
