⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Power Sources & Fuel (Part 3 - Article 701) ⚡
Where does the juice come from? Section 701.12 outlines approved alternate power sources for legally required standby systems—from generators to ESS and separate services. Let's break it down! 👇
Fuel and Operation Requirements:
Minimum 2-Hour Duration: The alternate source must maintain total load for at least 2 hours.
On-Site Fuel Supply: Must have an on-site fuel supply sufficient for at least 2 hours of operation.
No Sole Utility Reliance: Systems cannot rely solely on a public utility gas system or a municipal water supply for engine cooling (unless approved by the AHJ). Fuel transfer pumps must be powered by the standby system!
Approved Power Sources:
Generator Sets: Must have automatic starting, 15-minute time-delay retransfer, and independent battery charging.
Stored Energy (SEPSS / UPS / ESS): Must maintain total load for at least $1\frac{1}{2}$ hours without dropping below 87.5% nominal voltage.
Service Taps: Connections ahead of the service disconnect (or separate services) are permitted if located remotely to minimize simultaneous interruption.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
If your outdoor generator set has a disconnecting means that serves or passes through the building, it can double as your building disconnect under 701.12(C)(3) as long as it's readily accessible and within sight!
