SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Equipotential Planes Near Water (Part 4) ⚡
When is an equipotential concrete or copper grid mandatory around outdoor equipment near water? Let's finish up Article 682! 👇
Mitigating Step-Potential Hazards:
Trigger Conditions: Equipotential planes must be installed around outdoor service equipment or disconnects controlling water equipment where system voltage exceeds 250 volts to ground OR where equipment is located within 3 m (10 ft) of the body of water.
Grid Specifications:
Dimensions: Must extend at least 900 mm (36 in.) in all directions from which a person stands to operate equipment.
Grid Construction: Built using unencapsulated structural reinforcing steel tied together or a 300 mm by 300 mm (12 in. by 12 in.) copper grid bonded using 8 AWG solid copper wire via exothermic welding or listed clamps.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Equipotential planes equalize voltage between the ground surface and operating equipment, protecting workers from dangerous step-and-touch voltage gradients in wet agricultural and industrial water environments!
