Article 392 (Part 1 of 3)
Cable Trays — This One's a BIG Article, Let's Break It Down!
SLIDE 1 — Scope & Reconditioned Equipment (392.1, 392.3)
🏗️ WHAT IS A CABLE TRAY?
Covers ladder, ventilated trough, ventilated channel, solid bottom, and similar structures.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Cable trays are mechanical SUPPORT systems — NOT raceways (see the Article 100 definition of "raceway"). Typically industrial, but also used commercially for telecom/data, feeders, and branch circuits.
🚫 Reconditioned cable trays AND reconditioned associated fittings are NOT permitted to be installed (392.3(B)).
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted, Part 1 (392.10)
✅ WHAT CABLE TRAY CAN SUPPORT
Service conductors, feeders, branch circuits, communications, control, and signaling circuits.
🔹 NOT limited to industrial establishments — commercial installs are permitted too
🔹 Single insulated conductors only allowed under 392.10(B)(1) rules
🔹 Exposed to direct sunlight → conductors/jacketed cables must be sunlight resistant
🔹 Cable trays AND fittings must be identified for the intended use
📋 A long list of wiring methods (Table 392.10(A)) is permitted in cable tray — think AC, MC, MI, TC, EMT, ENT, RMC, PVC, NM, UF, fiber optic, and more — each governed by its own article.
SLIDE 3 — Uses Permitted, Part 2: Special Situations (392.10(B)–(E))
🏭 INDUSTRIAL ESTABLISHMENTS ONLY (392.10(B))
Where only qualified persons service the system: single-conductor cables (1/0 AWG+, listed/marked for tray use) and single- or multiconductor medium voltage (Type MV) cables are permitted. EGC single conductors must be 4 AWG or larger.
⚗️ HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS (392.10(C))
Only cable types/raceways permitted by OTHER articles are allowed in the tray.
🧪 NONMETALLIC CABLE TRAY (392.10(D))
Extra allowance for corrosive areas and areas needing voltage isolation (e.g., fiberglass trays in electrolytic cell rooms).
✈️ AIRFIELD LIGHTING (392.10(E))
Series-circuit airfield lighting cable up to 5000V, powered by constant current regulators, permitted where only qualified persons access/service it.
SLIDE 4 — Uses Not Permitted + Final Exam (392.12)
⛔ WHERE YOU CAN'T USE CABLE TRAY
1️⃣ Hoistways
2️⃣ Subject to severe physical damage
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 392 (Part 1)
Q: Per 392.1 Insights, cable trays are classified as what, NOT a raceway?
A) A wiring method
B) A mechanical support system
C) An enclosure
D) A junction system
