SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: MDC Transformers & Disconnects (Part 3) ⚡
Can utility transformers be placed inside a modular data center? What electrical outlets are mandatory for servicing? Let's break down Part II of Article 646! 👇
Dry-Type Only & Maintenance Outlets:
Power Transformers: Only dry-type power transformers supplying power exclusively to the MDC are permitted inside the enclosure. Utility-owned or non-utility premises distribution transformers are strictly prohibited inside an MDC.
Servicing Receptacle: At least one 125-volt, 15- or 20-ampere duplex convenience outlet must be provided in each work area so technicians can power test equipment without running extension cords across doorways.
Disconnecting Power and HVAC:
Alternative Wiring: Article 645 alternative wiring methods are permitted inside MDCs if all NFPA 75 room conditions are met.
Emergency Disconnect: An approved means must be provided to disconnect power to all electronic equipment in the MDC and simultaneously shut down dedicated HVAC systems while closing fire/smoke dampers.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Never run extension cords through doorways for routine maintenance inside a modular data center. Section 646.22 specifically requires a dedicated convenience outlet in every workspace for test gear!
