Slide 1 — Hook "Finishing underground installations — cable shielding grounding, wet-location rules, splicing, and earth movement."
Slide 2 — 305.15(A)(1)–(3) & (B)
Shielded/nonshielded metal-sheathed underground cables: sheaths must be grounded through an effective grounding path, and either direct buried or installed in raceways identified for that use.
Industrial establishments with qualified-persons-only maintenance: nonshielded single-conductor cables up to 2000V, listed for direct burial, CAN be direct buried.
Other nonshielded cables (not covered above): must go in RMC, IMC, or rigid nonmetallic conduit encased in at least 3" of concrete.
(B) Wet locations: underground enclosure/raceway interiors are automatically wet locations — conductors/cables must be listed for wet locations AND either moisture-impervious metal-sheathed or listed wet-location type; connections/splices need wet-location approval too.
Slide 3 — 305.15(C)–(H)
(C) Damage protection: conductors emerging from ground need listed raceway enclosure; pole-mounted raceways use RMC/IMC/RTRC-XW/Schedule 80 PVC (or equivalent) from minimum cover depth to 8 ft above grade; conductors entering a building need protection to the entry point; settlement/frost-prone installations need damage prevention; metallic enclosures must be grounded.
(D) Splices/taps: direct burial cables CAN be spliced without splice boxes, if watertight, mechanically protected, and — where shielded — the shielding stays CONTINUOUS across the splice (engineered cabling systems get a narrow exception allowing interrupted/overlapped shields, each grounded at one point).
(E)-(H): backfill can't contain damaging materials (same rule as 300.7(F)); raceways entering from underground need moisture-sealing at the building end; earth movement (settlement/frost) needs damage-prevention arrangement (S-loops, expansion fittings, flexible connections); directional boring needs approved-for-purpose cables/raceways.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "At a splice in a shielded direct-buried cable, what must remain continuous across the splice (absent the engineered-cabling-system exception)?" A) The conductor insulation color B) The shielding C) The conduit D) Nothing special is required
✅ Answer: B — 305.15(D): the shielding must stay continuous across splices/taps in shielded cable.
