SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Mandatory Voltage Drop & Conductor Tagging (Part 2) ⚡
Unlike general lighting, Article 647 enforces mandatory voltage drop caps for technical power systems to ensure circuit breakers trip during a 60V fault. Let's check out Section 647.5! 👇
Strict Limits for Fault Clearing:
Fixed Equipment: Branch circuit voltage drop shall not exceed 1.5 percent, and combined feeder/branch-circuit drop shall not exceed 2.5 percent.
Cord-Connected Outlets: Receptacle branch circuit voltage drop shall not exceed 1.0 percent (calculated at 50% load rating), with combined feeder/branch drop capped at 2.0 percent.
Clear Identification at All Points:
Junction Boxes: All junction box covers must be clearly marked to indicate the distribution panelboard and the 60/120V system voltage.
Conductor Tagging: Conductors must be identified by color, marking, or tagging at all splices and terminations, with legend postings at each panelboard.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Why are voltage drop limits mandatory here? Because faults to ground occur at only 60 volts instead of 120 volts, circuit impedance must be kept ultra-low to guarantee enough fault current to trip the breaker instantly!
