SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Collector Rings, Grounding & Lightning Electrodes (Part 3) ⚡
How does power pass continuously through a rotating center pivot point? How are massive metal structures protected against lightning strikes in open fields? Let's check out Sections 675.11 to 675.15! 👇
360-Degree Power Distribution:
Collector Rings: Swivel collector rings transmit power and control signals across rotating joints. Power rings must be rated at not less than 125% of the largest load + sum of all other loads, housed in weather-protected enclosures.
EGC Sizing: The equipment grounding conductor must be run as an integral part of each cord/cable and sized not smaller than the largest supply conductor!
Stationary Point Grounding:
Structural Bonding: Metal-to-metal contact between structural members and non-current-carrying parts serves as an approved bonding path.
Lightning Electrode Mandate: If an irrigation machine has a stationary center point, a dedicated grounding electrode system must be connected at the stationary point for lightning protection!
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: In wide-open farmland, center pivot structures act as giant lightning rods. Always install a driven ground rod bonded to the pivot point frame to safely dissipate lightning surges away from sensitive control electronics!
