SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Fixture Wire Types & Ratings (Part 4) ⚡
75°C to 250°C temperature ratings, specialized insulation types, and OCPD rules—let's finish Article 402! 👇
SLIDE 2 (INSULATION TYPES & TEMPERATURE RATINGS)
Specialized High-Heat Materials:
Listing Requirement: Fixture wires must be of a type listed in Table 402.13 and are suitable for 600 volts nominal (unless otherwise noted).
Heat-Resistant Rubber: Types FFH-2 and FFHH-2 offer flexible stranding rated from 75°C up to 90°C.
Fluoropolymer & Polyimide Cords: Special high-heat types like HF/HFF (ECTFE at 150°C), KF-1/KF-2 (Polyimide tape up to 200°C), and PAF/PTF (PFA/PTFE up to 250°C / 482°F) handle extreme fixture environments.
Voltage Limits: Certain types like KF-1, KFF-1, RFH-1, and RFH-2 are strictly limited to 300 volts.
SLIDE 3 (OVERCURRENT PROTECTION)
Protecting Small Conductors:
Section 240.5 Rules: Overcurrent protection for fixture wires shall comply with Section 240.5.
Fault Protection: Standard branch-circuit OCPDs provide short-circuit and ground-fault protection, while luminaire load limits prevent thermal overloads.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Always check the temperature rating on high-heat fixture wire (like 250°C PTFE) when wiring enclosed commercial high-bay or commercial cooking luminaires to prevent insulation meltdown!
