⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Phase Converter Conductors & OCP (Part 2) ⚡
Sizing supply conductors for variable loads, overcurrent protection rules, and tracking the manufactured phase—let's check Sections 455.6 and 455.7! 👇
SLIDE 2 (CONDUCTOR AMPACITY)
Carrying the Input Current:
Variable Loads: Where loads are variable, single-phase supply conductor ampacity must be at least 125 percent of the phase converter nameplate single-phase input full-load amperes.
Fixed Loads: Specific fixed load configurations utilize dedicated multiplier rules (such as 250%) based on motor currents and voltage ratios.
SLIDE 3 (OVERCURRENT PROTECTION & MANUFACTURED PHASE)
OCP and Phase Identification:
Overcurrent Protection: For variable loads, OCP must be set at not more than 125 percent of the nameplate input full-load amperes.
Manufactured Phase Marking: The manufactured phase created by the converter must be identified with distinctive markings in all accessible locations to prevent improper connections.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always distinctly mark your manufactured phase conductor across all accessible locations—this ensures future mechanics can easily identify it!
