⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Zone Dust Wiring Methods (Part 3 - Article 506) ⚡
Conduit requirements, cable trays, and dust-tight boxes in Zone 20, 21, and 22 facilities—how do you run raceways safely? Let's review Section 506.15! 👇
Heavy-Duty Dust Exclusion:
Zone 20: Restricted to intrinsically safe "ia" circuits or heavy-duty wiring methods like Type MC-HL, Type MI, Type ITC-HL, and threaded RMC or IMC. All boxes and fittings must be dust-tight with threaded bosses.
Zone 21: Permits IS circuits ("ia" or "ib") and additional industrial cables like Type TC-ER-HL and Type P installed in single layers in cable trays with proper spacing to prevent heat buildup from dust blankets.
Flexible Options & Dust Seals:
Zone 22 Raceways: Expands to include standard cable types (MV, MC, ITC, TC, PLTC), EMT, wireways, and busways, provided they are dusttight and properly terminated.
Sealing Rules: Seals must be provided where necessary to prevent dust/fiber ingress or maintain protection types, but they do not need to be explosionproof or flameproof.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Boxes and fittings in Zone 20 and metal dust locations must be specifically identified for Zone 20/21 or listed for Class II, Division 1 locations to prevent dust ingress at terminal taps!
