SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Stationary Batteries (Part 1 - Article 480) ⚡
Battery system scopes, listing exemptions, corrosion prevention, and prime mover wiring rules—welcome to Article 480! Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & LISTING REQUIREMENTS)
What Article 480 Covers & Mandates:
System Scope: Applies to all installations of stationary batteries having a capacity greater than 3.6 MJ (1 kWh).
Listing Required: Stationary batteries and battery management equipment must be listed, with an explicit exception for vented lead-acid or nickel-cadmium batteries.
SLIDE 3 (TERMINATIONS & PRIME MOVER WIRING)
Connecting and Supplying Circuits:
Corrosion Prevention: Connections to and within batteries with acidic or caustic electrolyte must use approved corrosion inhibitors per manufacturer instructions.
Mechanical Strain Relief: Intercell and terminal connections must not put mechanical strain on battery terminals.
Prime Mover Exception: Overcurrent protection is not required for conductors from a battery of 60 volts dc or less providing power for starting, ignition, or control of prime movers.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always apply approved corrosion inhibitors to acidic or caustic battery terminals and ensure fine-stranded cables are properly pre-formed to prevent mechanical strain!
