Episode 2: Power Capacity and Selective Load Management (700.5)
The primary technical challenge of emergency power is the "cold-start." When utility power drops, the source faces a massive, simultaneous inrush of motors, fire pumps, and lighting. "Capacity" is dynamic; the system must be capable of handling these rapid load changes.
The Hierarchy of Power (700.5(C))
If one generator supplies multiple load types, you must use automatic load management (pickup and shedding) in this order:
Emergency Circuits (The absolute priority)
Legally Required Standby Circuits
Optional Standby Circuits
The "So What?" Layer
Utilize Peak Load Shaving (700.5(D)). Running the generator in parallel with the normal source for non-emergency purposes provides assurance that the engine is healthy and ready. A generator that runs regularly under load is far more reliable than one that only gets a 10-minute "no-load" test once a month.
