SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Legally Required Standby (Part 1 - Basics & ATS) ⚡
What happens when normal power fails, and smoke removal systems, sewage pumps, or critical industrial processes need to keep running? That's where Article 701 kicks in. Let's break down the general rules and transfer switch requirements! 👇
Legally Required vs. Emergency Systems:
The 60-Second Rule: Unlike emergency systems (Article 700), which must kick in within 10 seconds, legally required standby systems must be available in 60 seconds or less.
Typical Loads: Installed for systems that could create hazards or hamper rescue/firefighting if stopped—like ventilation, smoke removal, heating, refrigeration, and sewage disposal.
Transfer Switch Requirements:
Automatic & Mechanically Held: ATS equipment must be automatic, listed for emergency/legally required use, and electrically operated / mechanically held.
Banned Hardware: Meter-mounted transfer switches are strictly prohibited for legally required standby use.
Reconditioned Ban: Reconditioned transfer switches are illegal to install (Section 701.3).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always check your commissioning and record-keeping requirements under 701.4! The AHJ must witness the initial commissioning test, and periodic testing under load must be documented and kept on site.
