⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Cannabis Oil Systems (Part 1 - Article 512) ⚡
Propane, butane, and ethanol extraction equipment—welcome to Article 512! How does the National Electrical Code regulate the safety of commercial cannabis oil extraction facilities? Let's break it down! 👇
Covering Extraction & Processing:
The Scope: Covers cannabis oil preparatory equipment, extraction equipment, booths, post-processing equipment, and systems using flammable gases or vapor-producing liquids.
Mandatory Listing: All equipment, systems, and booths must be listed for the location (such as ANSI/UL 1389 standards).
Other Equipment in Booths: General equipment inside cannabis oil booths must also be listed for the location, with exceptions for booths featuring approved gas detection systems.
Strict Building Restrictions:
No Assembly or Residential Buildings: Cannabis extraction shall not be located in any building containing assembly, educational, day care, health care, ambulatory health care, residential board and care, residential, or detention and correction facilities.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: The extraction process frequently introduces explosion risks because solvents like butane, pentane, hexane, and propane are released during processing and off-gassing!
